USING LATEX

Here is a tip sheet with guidance on using LaTeX to create PDFs that comply with the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standard.  Disclaimer: this is just a collection of advice that I have found to be helpful in my own work: your mileage may vary, and this advice comes without guarantees of any sort -- not even a warranty of fitness for a particular purpose.

And here are the slides from a presentation that I gave with Kyle Horne on this topic on January 13, 2026 [PDF] [TEX].  The PDF is best viewed in full-screen format.

How and Why?

On January 28, 2014, I gave a presentation on LaTeX typesetting.  You can watch the video capture, if you're interested.  I gave an updated version on October 8, 2025, and posted the associated documents below.

Note that I've posted the [.tex] source files here so that you can see how I did things.  However, you won't be able to recompile them on your own unless you first extract the necessary image files from the [.zip] archive into the same folder as the [.tex] file.

  • Typesetting with LaTeX: [PDF] or [TEX]

    • Source files: [ZIP]

  • Overleaf

  • MiKTeX installation guide: [PDF] or [TEX]

    • Source files: [ZIP]

  • Homework solution template: [PDF] or [TEX]

If you use Adobe Reader version 10 or higher, WinEdt may throw funny error messages about ``DDEOpen'' or ``DDEClose'' when you try to open or close a PDF file from WinEdt. If you run into this problem, I have advice for you.
